Multiplying a single digit by 999

You won’t be surprised to learn that multiplying by more than two 9’s is as easy as 99.

This is how it’s done

4 X 999

Again, as we did for single numbers, bring the number down by one, giving 3.

As we only have one digit we don’t touch the first two 9’s, 99.

For the last part we find the difference between 4 and 10.

Bring all the numbers

together 4 X 999 = 3996

7 X 999

Subtract one from 7 giving 6.

Find the difference between 7 and 10 giving 3.

Bring them all together,

7 X 999 = 6993
